Photographer Lia Halloran Captures Skaters Hitting Warp Speed

Lia Hallorans Griffith Park (2008)Courtesy of DCKT Contemporary

J.J. Abrams would do well to take a look at Lia Hallorans spooky photographs of late-night skate parks, all of them seemingly possessed of skaters past. Those among us who have (sexist presumptions ahead!) spent hours sitting on the sidelines watching the boys skate up and down and up and whoosh, there they go, down again, can be glad Halloran's made something lovely out of the experience. See more at DCKT Contemporary through September 13.

Yothu Yindi is the most successful and internationally accepted of Australia's native bands. Their importance lies in their optical fusion of traditional music and performance with contemporaneous tilt.

The appoint of the ring translates as "mother and kid" and is basically a kinship term used by the Yolngu people of the Northern Territory's Arnham Land. The group's central figure Mandawuy Yunupingu and clanswoman Witiyana Marika were originally contribution of the rock band the Swamp Jockeys with non-aboriginals Cal Williams and Stuart Kellaway. They collected other primaeval musicians and dancers to go Yothu Yindi, a company ab initio created to perform at cultural events both in Australia and internationally.

A later 1988 enlistment encouraging Midnight Oil both in Australia and North America brought the band to Sydney where they exhausted a day recording a demonstration tape. Mushroom Records released the demonstration as it was as Yothu Yindi's first album, Homeland Movement. One incline comprised Midnight Oil-like politicized rock. The former position of the album concentrated on traditionally based songs wish "Djapana (Sundown Dreaming)" written by sometime teacher Mandawuy Yunupingu.

Mandawuy's mob has a long and proud tradition in the skin for native state rights and at the beginning of the nineties there was political spill of the possibility of a symbolical accord betwixt black and tweed Australians. In an effort to keep the idea on the political landscape painting, Midnight Oil's Peter Garrett and Paul Kelly collaborated with Mandawuy on a song called "Accord." When it was initially released the song scarcely created a ripple, treated as the political statement it was. Melbourne terpsichore remixers Filthy Lucre distinct to work their magic on the song, favoring the musical message over the political one. "Treaty'"s success spread to Yothu Yindi's sec album, Tribal Voice, which took the band around the worldly concern and finally saw Mandawuy Yunupingu named as 1992 Australian of the Year.

Initially, Mandawuy victimized his music profile to farther the effort of his "other" job, as headmaster of a culturally interracial schoolhouse in Arnham Land, simply he terminated up being forced to apply for depart to condense on his music career.

Ever since "Pact," Yothu Yindi has straddled its iI musical words, traditional and commercial, with varying success.

Despite failing to touch the commercial success or cross-cultural impact of their Athens, GA ,compatriots R.E.M. and the B-52's, Pylon's influence on the city's legendary music scene proved exactly as marked -- the group's propellent, angular jangle pop reasoned resonated non only if through and through the Athens originative community simply throughout the American pop tube of the eighties, and though more heard-of than actually heard, their office as elderberry bush statesmen of the alternative rock explosion is unassailable. Borrowing their name from the William Faulkner novel, Pylon was founded by guitar player Randy Bewley and bassist Michael Lachowski, University of Georgia artistry students divine by the likes of Television, the Ramones, and Talking Heads; the brace soon sublease pattern blank space in a studio loft rented by local creative person Curtis Crowe, wHO cursorily signed on to dally drums. After auditioning a series of vocalists, the band finally settled on cuss UGA pupil Vanessa Briscoe, whose typical yip style ideally complemented the music's notched guitars and warriorlike rhythms. The quartette made its live debut in March 1979; that summertime, the B-52's became the darlings of the New York scene thanks to their breakthrough hit "Rock Lobster," and their success paved the path for Pylon to make their own Big Apple debut, with Philadelphia and Boston appearances following ahead the school year resumed. Pylon's debut individual, "Cool," appeared on the dB label in early 1980, earning strong critical notices and rising as a major resistance dance strike; that summer, they issued their debut LP Spiral, too opening for the B-52's in New York's Central Park. Pylon toured on a regular basis ahead up to -- and in the wake of -- their soph movement, 1983's Bite, just dissatisfied with the finished LP, and as well demoralized by an stillborn circuit in support of U2, the band dissolved. In their absence, Athens emerged as the nexus of the American resistance thanks mostly to the snowballing success of R.E.M., wHO regularly cited Pylon as a major influence on their music; in fact, when in 1987 Rolling Stone named R.E.M. "America's Best Band," drummer Bill Berry argued the honour actually belonged to Pylon, even though the radical had disbanded four eld earlier. Their posthumous notoriety, in tandem with the impendent press release of dB's Hits compilation, convinced Pylon to reform in 1988; after opening for R.E.M. on their William Green enlistment, they too recorded a new album, nineties Chain. With Bewley's decision to leave the card, however, Pylon once again called its quits, playing their terminal show at Athens' notable 40 Watt Club on November 22, 1991.

Fans won't have bar of backlash

JAMES Blunt may be in the midst of a backlash, but a near sold-out Rod Laver Arena crowd weren't having a bar of that on Tuesday night.

Blunt has become a victim of his own success -- most notably the impossible to avoid 2005 hit You're Beautiful, which lead to a large dose of over-exposure.
While his second album All the Lost Souls has yet to spawn a song to connect with the masses the way You're Beautiful did, it is not without its charm.
I Really Want You moves from intimate to full-blown swagger and shows his voice can be powerful and not just passive.
Carry You Home is the kind of ballad his fans have come to expect while the upbeat 1973 throws a musical curve ball.
However, it's the songs from his debut Back to Bedlam that really ignite the crowd, which comprised mainly women and their perhaps dragged-along male partners.
Goodbye My Lover, High and No Bravery reminds you of the period when Blunt ruled the airways and You're Beautiful remains an anthem and "our song" for many couples in the crowd.
Melbourne's Gabriella Cilmi put in a rousing support set for what was her first hometown show.
Despite a G-rated wardrobe malfunction during her No.1 hit Sweet About Me, Cilmi proved that big soulful voice is indeed coming out of a 16-year-old girl from Dandenong.
A funky cover of Cry Me a River was a potent addition to her all-too-short set.

'Speed Racer' Stars Emile Hirsch, Matthew Fox, Christina Ricci Compare Their Real Cars To The Mach 5

Here he comes, here comes Speed Racer. But will he be a demon on wheels?

Out of all the summer '08 blockbusters, few are as enigmatic as the Wachowskis' big-budget adaptation of the 1960s Japanese series originally titled "Mach GoGoGo." They've told us that the movie will bring the cartoon to life, they've told us that it's like nothing we've ever seen, and they've even told us to come see it because the "Twilight" trailer will be attached. But the key question of whether it will be eye-popping or headache-inducing remains as mysterious as the identity of Racer X.

In making the film, "Matrix" masterminds Larry and Andy Wachowski had to sample from the original like hip-hop artists, keeping the attractive elements of the show while steering clear of its cheesiness. Somewhere in the middle, they hope, is a hit.

"In the show, [Speed] talks really, really, really fast, and he says the same thing over and over," explained star Emile Hirsch, pointing out a few of the twists and turns they had to navigate. "He'll be like, 'I wanna go on a race, because then I can win!' And then he'll say, 'When I win, I'll have won the race!' We couldn't do that for the movie."

"It was something I wrestled with a lot," agreed Matthew Fox, who appears in the film as the secretive racer who may or may not be Speed's older brother. "To put too much of a cartoon thing on your voice could be potentially alienating."

Fox's outfit didn't help matters. "There's a lot of ways being dressed in a leather suit can go wrong — there's a lot of ways that can end up being not such a cool thing," he laughed. "[I needed to bring] a certain complexity and human level to him."

"Everyone has always said to me, 'You should play Trixie!' because I kind of look like anime, so I always had that in my head, that if they make 'Speed Racer,' I'll go and audition," said Christina Ricci, cast in the flick as Speed's wide-eyed girlfriend. "I guess I have the eyes and the small chin, like anime."

The actress joked that the only drawback is that every time she starts to run somewhere, the backgrounds get blurry behind her. "That's so irritating," she laughed.

In real life, however, the stars insist that their experiences behind the wheel aren't nearly as animated.

"I am stuck in a very long lease that I got into before I saw the Al Gore movie. [I drive] a large black sedan, and it's not particularly fuel-efficient," Ricci revealed, adding that her big vehicle isn't exactly built for racing around a track. "I would love to have the [button on Speed's Mach 5 car] that jumps you over other cars, because then you could get out of traffic. And those people who don't pull far enough into the intersection when they're making a left turn? You could just be like, 'Boop! Sorry, I need to be over here!' That'd be great."

"I drive a black Toyota Prius right now," said Hirsch, wishing he could pimp his ride. "I want the saws that come out of the side. Those are cool."

"My drive-around car is just an Acura," said Fox, who presumably doesn't wear head-to-toe leather while driving his sedan. "I would love X's Gatling guns that pop out of the side of the car — that's pretty badass."

And if the movie is badass as well, then who knows? Perhaps "Speed Racer" could finally reverse the trend established by "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle," "Inspector Gadget" and "Underdog" and get people once again hungering for cartoon-to-movie adaptations.

"I want to make 'Ren & Stimpy' and play Ren," Hirsch laughed, doing his best impression of the neurotic Chihuahua. " 'Dammit, Stimpy!' "

"I was that girl who loved 'The Care Bears' and 'My Little Pony,' and 'He-Man' somehow got in there, but I don't know that I would want to be in any of those, or if I'd even want to see any of those become movies," Ricci said. "There was a cartoon 'Rainbow Brite' movie that was sort of trippy, and it made me feel horrible."

What few fans might remember, however, is that Ricci previously starred in a cartoon-to-movie adaptation. It was the 1995 film "Casper," and it helped launch her career.

"With 'Casper,' we were on real sets, but [the ghost] would just be a ball on a stick that they were floating around, showing us where the marks would be," she said of the key differences between the two films. "On this movie, we literally walked onto a giant soundstage that was bright green, and that's it. Some days there would be half a car or half a jet or something like that [and the rest was added in later with CGI]."

Ricci also found it a lot easier to create a believable romance with her "Speed Racer" leading man. "Kissing Casper was really embarrassing, because he was supposed to be see-through, so I had to make kissing faces, and I was 13, and I was so mortified," she recalled. "Oh, that was terrible. It was much better kissing Emile."

Check out everything we've got on "Speed Racer."

Solar-powered space pop jazz group Grandaddy was formed in Modesto, CA, in 1992 by Jason Lytle, bassist Kevin Garcia, and drummer Aaron Burtch; although a noisy, lo-fi approach characterized early recordings like 1994's Complex Party Come Along Theories, with the 1995 additions of guitar player Jim Fairchild and keyboardist Tim Dryden the group's sound expanded exponentially o'er the path of subsequent efforts including the unreleased Don't Sock the Tryer and the 1996 EP A Pretty Mess by This One Band. Originally issued on indie mark Will Records, 1997's acclaimed full-length Under the Western Freeway proven Grandaddy's originative breakthrough, and the following year the album was reissued on major-label V2, with "Summertime Here Kids" earning Single of the Week honors in the pages of the NME. The Broken Down Comforter Collection, a digest of singles tracks, preceded the 1999 Signal to Snow Ratio EP, which heralded a motion toward the time of origin electronic textures further in evidence on 2000's superb Sophtware Slump. In 2002, the grouping released another odds-n-sods aggregation, Concrete Dunes, which paved the way for a busy 2003: that spring, Grandaddy released the Floating Debris EP and their one-fourth full-length, Sumday, and spent the repose of the year touring, qualification appearances at festivals such as Glastonbury. In 2005, they resurfaced with the Excerpts from the Diary of Todd Zilla EP and a uncut record album (Simply Like the Fambly Cat) followed in 2006.
